Ca. AD 600
A Byzantine gold ring comprised of a thin round-section hoop, and an applied circular bezel that is adorned with a representation of the bust of the Virgin Mary. She is depicted facing forward, her hands raised in the orans gesture, a devotional pose commonly associated with prayer and supplication. The inclusion of a beaded halo surrounding the head of the Virgin Mary adds a further layer of symbolism. The piercing gaze of the Virgin Mary, depicted with great attention to detail, conveys a sense of transcendence, spiritual depth, and unwavering devotion.
Provenance: Private UK collection; formerly, from an old London collection formed in the 1990s.
